Masvingo acting provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna said the incident happened last week and identified the deceased as Tauya Chirongoye (32), of Mukosi Village Chief Nyajena, Masvingo.
He said on an unknown date but sometime in 2008 Chirongoye allegedly gave Francis Mubvigwi of the same village, a beast so he could sell to raise money for his tuition fees. Mubvigwi was studying at a local college.
It is alleged that Mubvigwi agreed to give back the beast on securing employment. However, Mubvigwi could not honour the agreement despite the fact that he managed to get a job just after completing his studies last year.
According to the agreement, Mubvigwi was supposed to give back the beast to Chirongoye by 23 August this year but instead of giving back a beast, Mubvigwi allegedly offered him a calf. This did not go down well with Chirongoye who went to his homestead and drank battery acid.
Chirongoye’s wife, Ms Beauty Shumba (25), who was said to be away, latter arrived and found his husband writhing in pain on the floor.
She rushed to look for milk from her neighbour but when she came back she found Chirongoye hanging from a tree 50 metres away from his house.
Police were alerted and attended the scene.
Investigations revealed that Chirongoye had consumed battery acid before hanging himself.
The body was taken to Morgenster Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
