A 34-year-old man believed to be mentally ill committed suicide at his family home a fortnight ago. Mutare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the death of Lovemore Nyagato of Sanyatwe Village under Chief Saunyama, in Nyanga.

Nyagato was found writhing in agony by his mother Mrs Eunice Nyagato (59), whom he stayed with and died while she was still trying to help him get to hospital.

“On the fateful day, Nyagato was left alone at home by his mother as she attended to her fields in the morning. On her return in the evening, she found him lying helplessly by the verandah,” said Insp Kakohwa.

He then told his mother that he had taken an insecticide to end his life. Nyagato claimed that he had decided to take his life because of his mental instability, which hindered him from finding a suitable woman to marry. Mrs Nyagato called out for help from a neighbour and efforts to resuscitate him failed. He died before they could ferry him to hospital.

A report was made to Nyamaropa police, who attended the scene and recovered some of the insecticide on the deceased’s bed. The body was referred to Regina Coeli Mission Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
