A Bulawayo man who allegedly stabbed his friend with a broken beer bottle on the neck on New Year’s Day yesterday appeared in court facing attempted murder charges.

Thembelani Ndlovu, 32, was not asked to plead when he appeared before provincial magistrate Willard Maphios Moyo.

Ndlovu accused his friend Sifundo Masuku of stealing his cellphone while the two were drinking beer at Mpopoma’s Patapata Beer Garden.

He then allegedly stabbed Masuku with a broken beer bottle and he fell unconscious.

Masuku was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital where he was admitted.

Ndlovu was remanded in custody to January 27.

Prosecuting, Mufaro Mageza told the court that Ndlovu and Masuku were drinking beer at Patapata Beer Garden at around 5PM.

When the bar closed, the two decided to go to their respective homes in Mpopoma.

The court heard that before they could leave, Ndlovu realised that his cellphone was missing and started accusing Masuku of having stolen it.

He then assaulted Masuku with an empty beer bottle which broke on impact.

Ndlovu used the sharp end of the bottle to stab Masuku once on the left side of the neck and he fell unconscious and started bleeding profusely.

He was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital and the matter was reported to the police leading to Ndlovu’s arrest.
