A 24-year-old Masvingo man allegedly fatally stabbed a fellow congregant with a knife during an all-night prayer meeting at an unnamed church following a dispute over badly-cooked relish, police have confirmed.
Tinos Mudyanembwa of Mutumwapasi Village under Chief Shumba allegedly stabbed Clever Guvuriro (28) of the same village once on the left side of the neck while having prayers at a church deacon’s homestead.
Masvingo police spokesperson Chief Inspector Charity Mazula said the incident occurred last Saturday at around 10pm.
She said Guvuriro’s body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
“I can confirm receiving a report of murder involving congregants who had a prayer vigil at a homestead in Masvingo rural,” said Chief Insp Mazula.
“The suspect has since been arrested and expected to appear in court soon, facing murder charges.”
Chief Insp Mazula said on the fateful day, Guvuriro and other congregates were at Mr Mutupo Madondo’s homestead for an all-night prayer gathering.
“At around 8pm, a 14-year-old boy allegedly served Clever Guvuriro and his friend Mr Simbarashe Gumbochuma, supper,” she said.
“Upon receiving his plate of sadza, Guvuriro mocked the boy, saying the relish was poorly cooked.”
This, she said, apparently irked the boy who advised Guvuriro that he was supposed to be mindful of the church environment and his language was in bad taste. Guvuriro could not accept being reprimanded by the boy and in protest, he repeatedly slapped him on the face until he fled. The boy, said Chief Insp Mazula, reported the matter to his attacker’s sibling Mr Moses Guvuriro and Mudyanembwa.
The two confronted Guvuriro, who was with his friend, Mr Gombochuma, and accused the pair of being a nuisance at church.
A fight ensued and Mudyanembwa allegedly took out an okapi knife from the pocket and stabbed Guvuriro on the left side of the neck.
“Guvuriro, who was bleeding profusely, rushed to his father Mr Gonori, who was also at the church before he died,” said Chief Insp Mazula.
