A 25-YEAR-OLD man from Matekenya Village, Mashonaland East was sentenced to 33 years in prison for stabbing a fellow dancer to death during a New Year’s celebration in Gokwe.
The accused, Gift Chimbangu and the deceased were dancing at Zumba Business Centre when a knife fight broke out.
An unnamed person stabbed a reveller and fled.
Chimbangu and the deceased gave chase but failed to catch the aggressor.
In a statement on X, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said Chimbangu accused his friend of letting the aggressor get away.
In a fit of rage, he drew a knife and plunged it into his chest.
He wiped the blood-stained knife on his own hair and ran away.
“A man from Matekenya Village, Chief Chireya, Gokwe North, Gift Chimbangu was convicted by the High Court sitting at Gokwe on murder charges. The accused person was 25 years old at the time he committed the offence,” read the statement.
“On the 1st of January 2023 the accused person and the deceased were amongst the people who were dancing to music at Zumba Business Centre, Gokwe. One of the dancers stabbed a fellow dancer with a knife. The accused person and two others chased after the one who had stabbed the dancer. When they could not catch up with him the accused person accused the deceased of obstructing their pursuit.
“An altercation ensued wherein the accused stabbed the deceased with a knife on the chest leading to his death. The accused then wiped the blood-stained knife on his own hair before fleeing the scene. A Police report was made leading to the arrest of the accused person. The accused person was convicted and sentenced to 33 years imprisonment.”
