A MAN from Tsholotsho is battling for his life in hospital after he was axed in the head by an unidentified man who emerged from the dark while he was drinking beer with friends at a business centre.

Sources said a man appeared from the dark and axed Mr Nkululeko Dube (54) twice in the head at Ngubomlilo Business Centre before fleeing unnoticed.

Mr Dube of Nemane village under Chief Gampu is admitted to Tsholotsho District Hospital since the attack at around 8PM on April 18.  Mr Dube’s attacker is on the run.

Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Siphiwe Makonese confirmed the attempted murder case.

“I can confirm we are investigating an attempted murder case and the suspect is on the run. The suspect appeared from the dark, struck him twice in the head and disappeared into the darkness,” she said.

One of the men who was drinking beer with Mr Dube who identified himself only as Mr Dhawu said they all failed to recognise his attacker as the incident occurred when it was dark.

“The suspect appeared from behind Dube and axed him twice in the head. We were all shocked by the incident and by the time we tried to jump to Dube’s aid, he was already on the ground. He lay unconscious, bleeding profusely from the two deep cuts. His attacker fled into the darkness with his axe and police are still hunting for him,” he said.

Mr Dhawu said they suspect someone from the village might be behind the attack as he suddenly left for South Africa.

“It has however, been noted that our prime suspect has since crossed the border to neighbouring South Africa. A relative to our suspect said the day after the incident happened, the suspect phoned them using his South African number saying he was already at the border.

“We reported the matter to the police and we rushed Dube to hospital. We pray police will apprehend the culprit and he pays for his sins,” said Dhawu.

Police have since appealed to members of the public to resolve their disputes amicably. “We have registered an increase in murder and attempted murder cases involving trivial matters which culminate in people clashing and stabbing each other. This has caused unnecessary loss of lives and serious injuries,” Insp Makonese said.
