A 40-YEAR-OLD Harare man who was found guilty of fondling his 14-year-old daughter was this week slapped with a 20-month jail term by a magistrate. The man, from an apostolic sect in Glen View, denied the charges but was convicted on overwhelming evidence by resident magistrate Ms Anita Tshuma in Mbare.
It was proved that on December 6 last year, the drunk man took advantage of the absence of his wife and woke up in the middle of the night and went to the dining room where his four children were sleeping,
The father removed the blanket his eldest daughter was under and lay on top of her while fondling her breasts.
In a closed court session, the child narrated her ordeal and revealed that her father went to the extent of trying to unbutton her blouse as she resisted.
The father also told the girl that he loved her.
The father tried to carry his daughter to his bedroom but stopped when she started shouting and pleading for her father to leave her alone.
The following morning the girl confided to church elders leading to the matter being reported to the police, resulting in the man’s arrest.
In his defence, the father said he only woke up to take his two-year-old child who was crying. He said he accidentally fell and landed lightly on his daughter.
He further argued that there was no way he could have managed to carry the 14-year-old girl considering that he was recently involved in a car accident that left one of his arms broken.
