A Harare man who reportedly fondled his neighbour’s minor niece before offering her $1 to silence her, appeared before a Harare magistrate yesterday. The 30-year-old man from Ruwa appeared before magistrate Mr Vakai Chikwekwe facing indecent assault charges. Washington Nyamute was remanded out of custody to July 11 on a $100 bail. As part of his bail conditions, he was ordered to report to the police every Friday, reside at his given address, surrender his passport and not to interfere with witnesses.

Prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa, told the court that on June 22, Nyamute arrived at the 11-year-old minor’s house and asked her about the whereabouts of her grandmother. It is alleged that he was told that she was not around, and Nyamute forced himself into the house, grabbed the minor and fondled her legs.

According to the State, the minor covered herself with blankets but Nyamute forcibly put his hands inside the blankets and continued to fondle her. Nyamute, the court heard, showed the minor his private part and ordered her to reciprocate but she refused.

He left, only to return the following morning and offered the minor $1 before ordering her not to tell anyone and the girl refused. The minor told her grandmother, who later filed a police report leading to Nyamute’s arrest.
