Man gets 11 months for theft

A 26-year-old Mbare man was last Friday sentenced to 11 months in prison for breaking into a house and stealing mobile phones worth $110. Tinotenda Chirume of Nenyere Flats appeared before Mbare magistrate Ms Anita Tshuma charged with unlawful entry.

Ms Tshuma sentenced Chirume to 15 months in jail before three months of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

A month was also suspended on condition Chirume restitutes Will Kumanguwo $60 by January 13.

He will serve an effective 11 months.

Facts are that on November 30, Kumanguwo secured his house by locking the doors, but forgot to close his bathroom window.

As Kumanguwo was watching television, Chirume gained access into the house through the half closed window and took two mobile phones worth $110.

However, Kumanguwo saw Chirume as he took the phones and shouted for help from neighbours.

Chirume escaped through the window but was later apprehended by Kumanguwo’s neighbours.

One mobile phone worth $50 was recovered.

Meanwhile, a 20-year-old man was on the same day ordered to perform 350 hours of community by a Mbare magistrate after he was convicted of stealing $450.

Tinotenda Dembetembe, who is Miriam Kaunye’s ex-tenant, broke into the house through an unfitted ceiling on different occasions.

Dembetembe was sentenced to 15 months in prison by Ms Gladys Moyo who suspended three months for five years on condition of good behaviour.

A further two months were suspended on condition Dembetembe restitutes $450 to Kaunye by January 29.

Facts are that sometime in August this year, Dembetembe broke into Kaunye’s house by climbing into the unfitted ceiling and stole $450.

He was arrested after Kaunye reported the matter to the police.
