A MUDZI man has been jailed 30 years for butchering a friend to death for failing to account for two grams of gold he had sent him to sell.
The horror happened in front of Smart’s wife and children.
Devine Chirisa had a misunderstanding with the late Smart Kamupira, leading to the gruesome murder on March 22, 2021.
Chirisa teamed up with Persuade Svovera, who is on the run, and ambushed Smart at his home during the night with the intention to recover either the money or the gold.
They found him with nothing.
They then demanded a bucketful of marijuana instead, which they also failed to get.
They repeatedly struck Smart on the head with a wooden axe handle.
At one point, Chirisa is said to have inserted a knife between Smart’s teeth.
Chirisa denied the allegations in a High Court trial.
However, after submissions, High Court judge, Justice Munamato Mutevedzi, found Chirisa liable for the murder.
“The court’s conclusion is that this was a gruesome murder, a bad murder if ever there is a good one.
“The widow, in a statement, narrated that her life basically went upside down as a result of this murder. It is for that reason that the court would not see any benefit derivable from the death sentence or from life imprisonment.
“Instead a determinate jail term which illustrates the court and society’s displeasure at the heinous crime which he committed will meet the justice of the case.
“For those reasons the offender is sentenced as follows: 30 years’ imprisonment,” reads the judgment.
