A 37-YEAR-OLD man from Siyephi Village, Chief Kandana area, in Plumtree, Matabeleland South Province, was arrested for allegedly hacking his two-year-old stepdaughter with a shovel after a domestic dispute with her mother.

This was after the mother told him that she no longer wanted to continue their affair.

This was heard when Abedinico Moyo appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware charged with physical abuse.

He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to 26 April.

The court heard that on 14 April at around 4pm the victim’s mother Patience Nyathi was with the accused when she told him that she was no longer interested in him since their relationship was not working out.

Moyo, the court heard, then became angry and demanded that Nyathi pay back all the money he had given her during the period they were in love.

In a fit of rage, Moyo grabbed a shovel lying on the ground, intending to strike Nyathi, who was holding the victim in her arms.

He missed her, but the shovel struck the child once in the head.

The child sustained a deep cut on the head due to the attack.

The child was taken to hospital for medical attention and matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Moyo.
