POLICE in Makhado, Limpopo, South Africa, have launched a manhunt for armed suspects who attacked and shot at a security van transporting six Zimbabwean prisoners awaiting trial.
The prisoners were freed during the attack. The escaped prisoners are Forward Shumba, 26, Shingirai Nyandome, 32, Brilliant Sibanda, 26, Erick Sithole, 35, Moses Zambara, 32 and Alex Nkomo, 35.
The six had been arrested for various crimes, including robbery, attempted murder and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, confirmed the incident to ZTN Prime’s Thupeyo Muleya.
“Police have launched a manhunt for a group of heavily armed suspects who shot at the police transporting six awaiting trial prisoners on Monday morning and managed to free them.
“The suspects were driving a grey Mercedes Benz and a white Toyota Bakkie.
“The escapees were arrested for serious crimes and are considered dangerous.
“Anyone with information, may contact the nearest police.”
