A 43-year-old Kambuzuma man has appeared in court after he was allegedly found in possession of a stolen safe containing valuables worth an estimated US$150 000.
Tafadzwa Toga appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mrs Jesse Kufa facing a charge of possession of property reasonably suspected to have been stolen.
He was remanded in custody to February 25 pending a bail application.
The complainant is Lazarus Mucheche, director of Wewe Transport (Private) Limited, based in Mutare.
According to the prosecution, led by Mr Oscar Madhume, the matter came to light on February 13, 2026, at around midday, when Mucheche was informed by his manager, Marcus Mupfurirwa, that a Chubb safe had gone missing from their premises at Wiston House along Leopold Takawira Street in Harare’s central business district.
It is alleged that Mucheche and Mupfurirwa suspected the safe to have been taken by individuals who had recently removed junk timber from the company’s yard.
They made inquiries which reportedly led them to Toga.
The prosecutor alleges that Toga was found in possession of the safe and claimed he had bought the locked Chubb safe for US$25 from an unidentified person.
The safe is said to have contained vehicle registration books, title deeds, mining certificates, semi-precious and polished stones, jewellery, marriage certificates, house plans and three gold Rolex watches.
A witness, Tinashe Muzembiwa, allegedly saw Toga breaking open the safe and removing some of the items.
However, when police later apprehended him, the safe was reportedly empty.
The total value of the property is estimated at US$150 000.
