A 39-year-old Chiweshe man was yesterday sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping his five-year-old niece.
The man appeared before the Bindura Magistrates’ Court.

In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said the incident occurred when the complaint was left in the care of her grandmother.

“On May 28, 2024, the complainant was left in the care of her 76-year-old grandmother by her mother,” read the statement.

The accused, the NPAZ said took the five-year-old from her grandmother’s home to a brick moulding site where he was working with his two sons.

“Upon arrival at the site, the accused person sent his sons to fetch firewood before taking the complainant to a secluded place where he raped her,” read the statement.

“He threatened to kill the complainant if she told her grandmother of the offence. The matter came to light when the complainant confided in her grandmother.

“A Police report was made leading to the arrest of the accused person. The accused person was convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.”
