A 35-YEAR-OLD man from Hwange in Matabeleland North province has been slapped with a 12-month jail sentence for setting a class one wire snare to trap animals.

Elias Munkuli appeared before a Hwange magistrate facing charges of contravening the Trapping of Animals Control Act. He pleaded not guilty but was convicted and sentenced.

Four months of his sentence was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. He will therefore serve an effective eight-month jail sentence.

The court heard that on 30 July 2024, Munkuli and his accomplice who is still at large were intercepted by game rangers who were on patrol, and his accomplice fled the scene.

The rangers recovered a kudu carcass, two spears and 23 wire snares from the culprit. The value of the carcass is US$3 000. The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Munkuli.
