A CHIVI man was fatally stabbed by a fellow imbiber allegedly after insulting him for refusing to buy him traditional beer. Police confirmed the incident which occurred on Sunday at around 7PM.
Sources said Ronald John Mafukidze, 28, of Chiungwe Village, Nyahombe Resettlement area under Chief Shindi allegedly stabbed Isheunesu Nyoni, 26, of Matukeni Village with an Okapi knife in self-defence.
They said Nyoni approached Mafukidze at Chehoba Business Centre and demanded that he buy him beer but the suspect refused.
“The pair was at the Market Place at Chehoba Business Centre drinking traditional beer separately when tragedy struck. Nyoni is said to have accused Mafukidze of being stingy after he refused to buy him beer.
“The two started exchanging harsh words resulting in Nyoni charging towards Mafukidze. He assaulted Mafukidze once on the face with open hands,” said Village Head Chiungwe.
Village head Chiungwe said a villager, Absolom Dzongo, 30, attempted to restrain Nyoni from further assaulting Mafukidze but was overpowered.
He said Nyoni continued assaulting Mafukidze.
“Mafukidze retaliated by stabbing Nyoni once on the left side of the chest with an Okapi knife. Nyoni fell down and started bleeding profusely from the stab wound and died on the spot,” said headman Chiungwe.
He said upon realising that Nyoni had died, Dzongo phoned a female villager, Tinashe Zhou, 36, of Ngundu Growth point to report the matter to the police leading to Mafukidze’s arrest.
Police at Ngundu attended the scene and took the body to Masvingo General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
Masvingo acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna confirmed the incident.
He said: “Mafukidze was arrested and is assisting police with investigations. He will appear in court soon facing murder charges.”
