Man killed in brawl over $1 note

Khululiwe Mema (31), of House Number 122 Habane Towship stabbed Thulani Nyathi (31) of House Number 680 in the same suburb, once on the left side of the stomach under the rib cage.

Narrating the incident, a witness who preferred anonymity said the two were drinking beer in the company of Mr Leonard Mpofu at Habane Beer Garden on Sunday evening at about 9pm. Mr Mpofu stayed at the same house with Nyathi.

“The misunderstanding ensued when Mema snatched a $1 note from Mpofu intending to buy beer with it. Nyathi intervened trying to make the two resolve the dispute,” said the witness.

“At that time Mr Mpofu ran away and went to his house, leaving the two quarrelling. Nyathi later on arrived at his home and went to bed.”

The witness said at about 1am on Monday, Mema followed Nyathi and found him asleep with his wife Shylet Dube.

Said the witness: “He forced open the door and stabbed Nyathi once on the left side of the stomach under the rib cage using an Okapi knife and fled from the scene.

“The wife sought assistance from neighbours who took Nyathi to Esigodini District Hospital. He, however, died upon arrival at the hospital.”

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident.

“The matter was reported to the police who attended the scene. The deceased sustained a deep wound in the stomach. The accused has been arrested,” said Sgt Mangena.

“Police will not tolerate violence and we urge people to seek a third party when they have problems.”
