A 48-year-old man from Rukweza Village in Mvuma allegedly fatally struck his father with a metal bucket after he tried to restrain him from fighting his younger brother over a cellphone. Acting Midlands police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed that Paul Musariri (Jnr) was being investigated for murdering his 79-year-old father, Paul Musariri.
“Police in Midlands province are investigating a case of murder where a 48-year-old man struck his father several times with a metal bucket, resulting in his death,” she said.
“The man was arrested and he is assisting police with investigations.”
Asst Insp Mukwende said on the day in question, Paul (Jnr) was at home together with his father, mother and younger brother, Peter Musariri.
Since their mother was failing to communicate over the cellphone, Paul (Jnr) allegedly remarked that this was because of the sub-standard phone she was using, which had been bought by his siblings.
It is believed that Peter was incensed by the remark and the heated verbal exchange that followed rapidly escalated into a fist-fight.
When their father tried to intervene, Paul (Jnr) reportedly picked up a metal bucket that he used to strike him several times on the head.
Paul (Snr) became unconscious and was rushed to Muvonde Hospital. His condition deteriorated, resulting in his death and his body was later taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem.
Asst Insp Mukwende appealed to members of the public to solve their disputes amicably by involving third parties, especially in cases where they fail to reconcile.
“We are appealing to members of the public to solve their disputes or differences amicably and where they fail to agree, they should engage third parties,” she said.
“Use of violence constitutes an offence and leads to unnecessary loss of lives.”
