Police identified the now deceased elderly as Gonese Kaukwe of Maronga Village under Chief Chireya in Gokwe North.
Midlands police spokesperson, Inspector Leonard Chabata, said the incident occurred on Saturday at about 6 pm.
“On the fateful day, the now deceased, Mrs Gonese Kaukwe (73) was shelling groundnuts while seated in her yard when her grandson Knowledge Munsaka, scooped a handful of unshelled groundnuts and started munching them,” said Insp Chabata.
He said the now deceased was not amused by her grandson’s conduct and started hurling insults at him while at the same time reprimanding him.
“Munsaka who could not take lightly the insults then picked up a machete which was on the ground and struck the grandmother once on the head before fleeing from the scene,” he said.
Insp Chabata said some neighbours later took the now deceased Mrs Kaukwe to Gokwe South District Hospital where she died upon admission.
He said police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect, Munsaka, who is on the run.
“Munsaka quickly fled from the scene following the incident and police have since launched a manhunt for him. We appeal to members of the public with information that might assist in his arrest to approach any nearest police station. They can also make use of police suggestion boxes,” he said.
