A 20-year-old Zaka man allegedly committed suicide by hanging following a dispute with his wife over her penchant for make-up, police have confirmed. Shepherd Debe locked himself in the couple’s bedroom and took his own life on Sunday and his body was discovered by his wife on the same day.

Acting Masvingo Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna said no foul play is suspected and urged people to seek counselling when having problems at home.

A neighbour Anel Bere said Debe was having problems with his 18-year-old wife, Lilian Mwadzikova, over applying nail polish and wearing make-up.

He said on the fateful day, Mwadzikova had applied nail polish.

Bere said a suicide note found in Debe’s pocket indicated that he had killed himself because his wife had disrespected him.

“On the fateful day around 8PM while in the kitchen after the two had supper, Debe realised that Mwadzikova had applied nail polish. This didn’t go down well with Debe who had long told his wife that he didn’t want her wearing make-up. Debe asked Mwadzikova why she had applied nail polish to which the wife responded rudely,” said Bere.

“Mwadzikova is said to have told her husband in no uncertain terms that she wasn’t going to stop as the make-up made her look beautiful. She told Debe that he wasn’t supposed to be bothered since he hadn’t paid for the nail polish.”

Bere said Debe left the kitchen in a huff and went to Jerera Growth point.

“Mwadzikova followed him and upon her arrival at the growth point the two had a heated argument. Debe later left and returned home leaving the wife behind. He went into his bedroom and locked the door from inside,” he said.

Mwadzikova is said to have followed after a few minutes, but found the door to their bedroom locked.

She allegedly knocked several times but there was no response.

Madzikova then allegedly peeped through the window only to see her husband’s body hanging.

A report was made to the police who took the body to Musiso Mission Hospital mortuary.
