THE love of the wise waters landed a Mutare man in trouble after he was caught stealing liquor at TM Supermarket.
Evans Jeranyama (54), who he is denying the charges, appeared before senior magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura, while Mr Shepherd Chavarika prosecuted.
It is alleged that Jeranyama tried to leave TM Supermarket in the Mutare Central Business District without paying for liquor he had taken.
Said Mr Chavarika: “The accused was arrested by security guards after he tried to leave the supermarket with 200ml bottles of Amarula, Viceroy, Whiskey, Discovery Spirit, Gold Blend and a 200 grams packet of cheese.
“He was arrested after it was proven by the security personnel that he had no receipt and therefore had not paid for the liquor and cheese.”
Jeranyama denied stealing the liquor saying he had bought it in Harare and only bought the 200grams of cheese from the TM Supermarket.
“When I got to TM supermarket, the parcel counter employee told me to enter the supermarket with my liquor saying the counter was full. I was, however, surprised to see security personnel arresting me as I came out of the shop,” he said.
He, however, failed to produced any receipt that proved that he had paid for the cheese or a receipt from the Harare shop where he claimed to have had bought the alcohol.
“Pleading guilty is actually a sign of remorse. All the same we do not force you to plead guilty, but after the trial has been conducted and if it is found out that you stole, you will get a stiffer penalty,” warned Mrs Chiundura.
The matter was adjourned for trial to today (Friday) for continuation of trial.
