Man offers $5 child support, demands paternity test

A BULAWAYO man yesterday offered his ex-girlfriend $5 child support after denying the paternity of their child.

Nonhlahla Dube dragged Tamuka Daura of Gwabalanda suburb to the maintenance court demanding $100 maintenance for the couple’s two- year-old son.

Daura said he could only pay $5 as he was unemployed.

He said his wife, who is a vendor, was responsible for his upkeep.

“I can’t afford that amount. I’m not the father of the child. She came to me saying she was eight months pregnant in December but she gave birth in March and that doesn’t add up,” Daura said.

He said when he inquired about the child so they could make arrangements for a birth certificate, Dube told him the child was not his and asked him to leave her alone.

“She should go look for the father of the child. Why does she want me to support the child two years later? I will not pay for paternity tests. I make $20 a month, I cann’t afford them,” Daura said.

Magistrate Sikhanyisile Ncube advised Daura to go for paternity tests if he doubted the child was his.

She told him he was liable to pay child support until he could prove he was not the father of the child.

“Dube will pay back your money if the child isn’t yours,” said the magistrate.

Dube told the court that the child is a spitting image of his father and she could do the paternity tests.

Magistrate Ncube ruled that Dube pay $30 in child support.
