IN a bid to evade paying maintenance, a Harare man said he was unemployed after being taken to court by his ex-wife.
Charles Nyathi was taken to court by his former wife, Margret Nyakadzumbu, who was demanding $200 000 for the upkeep of their two children.
He offered $20 000 and to pay school fees.
“I always buy food for my kids and pay fees, but I don’t work these days,” he said.
Margret turned down the offer, saying it wasn’t enough. She also accused him of lying about being unemployed.
“He is a nurse at Wilkins Hospital, but I am not sure how much he is earning. The food he is claiming to buy is one pack of Zapnaks and drink, which he buys once a term.
“At times I need money, especially for hospital bills. Recently, one of our children fractured his arm.
“He said that he doesn’t want to be involved and won’t pay any medical bills.”
Presiding magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini ordered him to pay US$60 and continue paying fees directly to the school and buy school uniforms twice a year.
