A KWEKWE man who allegedly poured sulphuric acid on his wife’s face after coming home drunk has been locked up as Zimbabwe marks the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence.
Shakemore Manyepa, 30, appeared at the Kwekwe Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody. According to a statement from the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), on 26 November around 7.30 PM Manyepa stumbled home “in an intoxicated state.”
The NPAZ said the accused allegedly began burning groceries he had bought before his wife stepped in to ask why he was destroying food meant for the family. “He started to burn groceries that he had purchased and his wife confronted him about it,” said the
“The disagreement escalated and the offender allegedly poured sulphuric acid on his wife’s face,” said the NPAZ .
His wife was rushed for medical attention while neighbours alerted police, leading to Manyepa’s arrest.
As the nation continues the annual global campaign to shine a light on violence against women, the NPAZ used the case to call for peace in homes and tougher community action. “The NPAZ strongly urges communities to refrain from gender based violence. We advocate for peaceful and legal resolution of conflicts,” said the NPAZ.
