A Gweru man is in trouble after he pushed a woman who fell unconscious and later died on admission at a local hospital. Tinashe Mpofu, 26, has been arrested in connection with suspected murder after he shoved to the ground an aunt to his ex-wife during a fight over custody of a child, resulting in the aunt falling unconscious.

The aunt, Anna Jani, who is said to have been suffering from high blood pressure (hypertension), was rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital where she died upon admission.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko yesterday said the suspect, Mpofu was now in police custody assisting with investigations in connection with the incident.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon.
Said Insp Mahoko yesterday: “The suspect, Tinashe Mpofu from Mkoba Village Three visited his ex-wife, Gladys Jani’s house in the same village where he demanded to take away their two months-old baby boy from the mother. The two had just divorced,” he said.

Insp Mahoko said during the pushing and shoving between  Mpofu and his ex-wife as she resisted with the infant,  the now deceased intervened and tried to restrain Mpofu from grabbing the  child.

“Mpofu went on to push Anna Jani away and she fell to the ground. Jani, who was said to have a history of high blood pressure fell unconscious following the push and was rushed to the hospital. She died on admission at Gweru Provincial Hospital on the same day,” he said.

Insp Mahoko said the matter was reported to the police leading to Mpofu’s arrest.
“Police are investigating the matter and Mpofu is assisting police in that regard. We want to take this opportunity to warn members of the public not to use violence when trying to solve domestic issues,” he said.

“Mpofu was not aware of her health background and pushed her to the ground. He might find himself facing a murder charge which is a very serious offence because of  a mere push,” he said.
