A 20-YEAR-OLD man from Insuza in Matabeleland North has been arrested for allegedly raping and impregnating his 14-year-old sister. The man, who lives in Maraposa Village under Chief Deli, was arrested on Tuesday after he was alleged to have repeatedly raped his teenage sister until she fell pregnant. The girl, who is two months pregnant, was allegedly raped by her blood brother between May and June this year at their parents’ homestead.
He allegedly sneaked into a bedroom where his two sisters were sleeping and he raped his young sister once, but she did not report the attack to anyone.
From that day onwards, the man allegedly used the same modus operandi to rape his sister until the matter came to light this month.
The sibling’s aunt, Progress Dube, said she never suspected that her niece could be pregnant until she was warned by an alert friend. On interviewing the girl, she discovered that she was actually pregnant by her brother.
“This is a big shock to me and the rest of the family. The children lost their mother and I’ve been staying with them and their father. I’ve been a mother figure to my brother’s children but I’m wondering why this girl never came out to share this shocking and embarrassing behaviour with me,” she said.
“This girl shares a bedroom with her younger sister who is 10 years old, but as a child she didn’t see this happening. This only came to light after a friend confronted me about the girl’s bulging tummy. That’s when we interrogated her and she disclosed the haunting and embarrassing secret.”
Dube said it took them a while to report the matter as they were puzzled as a family on how to handle the matter.
She added: “It’s hard to sit here knowing that a member of our family is going to jail, unfortunately we concluded he deserved it. He has ruined the future of this bright girl and so as a family, it took us guts to decide to take the matter to the police. We’re glad he was immediately picked up by police.
“What’s this world turning to? How can one really turn his own sister into a wife to an extent of sleeping with her on a daily basis?
“I’m also afraid of him now because he treats himself like an animal yet there’re girls out there.”
The alleged rapist, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his victim, is due before a Bulawayo magistrate this week.
