A 35-year-old man from Mudzi on Monday raped and killed his in-law following a dispute over non-payment of wages for his son who was working for the victim. Acting Mashonaland East Provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed the incident, saying they have since arrested Charles Veremo in connection with the case. “We arrested Veremo of Mapundu Village under Chief Mukota in Mudzi who raped and killed his in-law Lovenesia Magohoto (55) following a dispute over his son’s outstanding salary,” he said.
It is alleged that on the fateful day, Magohoto, who was employer of Veremo’s son Misheck, was drinking the illicit brew Zed in the company of Veremo and Maggy Dzingirai (75).
A misunderstanding arose between Veremo and Magohoto over Misheck’s outstanding wages. It is alleged that Veremo started assaulting Magohoto with fists prompting Dzingirai and Pedzisai Magohoto (34), who is daughter to Magohoto, to intervene in a bid to refrain him from further assaulting her. Veremo picked a wooden log and continued assaulting Magohoto.
Pedzisai rushed to a nearby homestead to seek assistance and Peter Kadzirange rushed to the scene and managed to stop Veremo from assaulting Magohoto and escorted him to his homestead.
Veremo returned around 10pm and took Magohoto to an abandoned hut where he raped her once. Magohoto was found lying in the abandoned hut by Pedzisai the following morning where she told her that she had been raped by Veremo.
Pedzisai and Kadzirange rushed Magohoto to Masarakufa Clinic where she was transferred to Kotwa Hospital and died on admission.
