A 41- year- old man who turned his 11-year-old step daughter into a sexual slave at the instigation of a traditional healer so as to allegedly gain wealth will languish in jail.
The sexual pervert from How Mine on the outskirts of Bulawayo told a court that he was living in grinding poverty and as a result he approached a traditional healer to rid him of a bad spell of poverty that was tormenting him.
The court heard that a traditional healer told him he had to sleep with his step daughter and after that the spell would be cast off. On that belief, the court heard, last year in November when his wife left the children in his care he exploited the opportunity and invited his daughter to his bedroom and ordered her to lie on the bed before he sexually attacked her.
After the act, the court heard, he warned his daughter not to tell anyone about the attack. The court heard whenever his wife went away he would sexually attack the minor and after that he would tell the minor that if ever she told anyone about the matter he would kill her.
The teenager kept the troubling matter to herself until she developed sores on her private parts.
It is said her mother took her to a hospital and that is where she spilled the beans disclosing that she was sexually attacked by her stepfather.
The matter was reported to the police leading to his arrest.
The man pleaded guilty before Bulawayo regional magistrate Mark Dzira.
“I was living in abject poverty and my wife was the only bread winner and this lowered my dignity in the community as a result I decided to approach a traditional healer who advised me to sleep with my step-daughter saying afterwards the long-running bad spell would be cast off,” he said.
He was convicted and sentenced to 18 years in jail.
“You were entrusted with a child and turned her into a sex slave. You are found guilty and sentenced to 18 years in jail of which three years are suspended on condition that you will not commit a similar crime within a period of five years,” said the magistrate.
The rape convict will effectively serve 15 years in jail.
