Man seeks to evict pregnant girlfriend

Mukumba applied for a protection order against Melody Chikarango.
However, magistrate Ms Miriam Banda dismissed the application saying Mukumba was trying to evade responsibility.

“It is traditionally correct that when a woman falls pregnant she can elope.
“Culturally families have to come together to map the way forward.

“The court cannot intervene in such a process and I would advise you to follow the cultural way,” Ms Banda said.

In his application, Mukumba indicated that Chikarango cannot just leave her job in South Africa because she is pregnant.

“She cannot force me to take her as my wife. I am responsible for the pregnancy but I will assist her but not at my parent’s house.

“She is just ashamed that she will become the talk of Chitungwiza community where she resides when the pregnancy starts to show.”

Mukumba argued that he was not ready to be married.
Chikarango told the court that Mukumba was too scared of his United States-based mother.
“His mother is coming on January 5 and he doesn’t want her to find out about me,” she said.
