A 52-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced to 24 months in prison and ordered to pay US$1 000 restitution for setting his two huts on fire following a misunderstanding with his wife over infidelity.
Watson Nyoni (52) of Badminton Farm, Nyamandlovu in Umguza District appeared before Western Commonage magistrate, Mr Jeconia Prince Ncube, facing a charge of malicious damage to property.
He pleaded guilty to the charge and was initially sentenced to 40 months in prison, of which six months were suspended for five years on condition he does not commit a similar offence within the period.
Ten more months were further suspended on condition that he restitutes the complainant US$1 000 before 17 April. The remaining 24 months are effective.
Prosecutor, Mr Tafara Dzimbanhete, told the court that Nyoni and the complainant are husband and wife.
He said on 12 February at around 3PM, Nyoni had a misunderstanding with his wife, Sihle Magadebe (52), whom he was accusing of infidelity.
The State told the court that it was in the heat of the argument that Nyoni became violent, took matches and burned two huts.
The two huts were destroyed beyond repair as well as the property inside the huts, said Mr Dzimbanhete.
The total value damaged is US$1 000 and nothing was recovered.
