A 58-year-old Juru man killed his daughter-in-law and then himself, using a pesticide, after setting fire to a bedroom hut.
His son, daughter-in-law and grandchild were sleeping in the hut which was set ablaze.
The motive for the attack remains unclear.
Farai Rupondo armed himself with an axe and bottles before using petrol to set fire to the hut.
His son, Shepherd Njerere, who escaped through a window, was hit with a bottle on the face.
His daughter-in-law, Maybe Boboneya, died instantly from wounds inflicted with an axe, while his two-year-old grandchild was taken to hospital after also being hit with the axe.
National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the tragic incident.
He said Rupondo armed himself with an axe and bottles before sprinkling petrol on the thatched bedroom hut and torching it.
“Njerere was struck with a bottle on the face after escaping from the bedroom through a window,” said Ass Comm Nyathi.
Boboneya died on the spot, while the infant was critically injured and rushed to Shamva Hospital.
He said she was struck with an axe on the head and left leg.
Ass Comm Nyathi said the police were also investigating a case of murder in Gweru whereby a 17-year-old was killed after boarding a private vehicle to Masvingo.
“A 17-year-old teenager was found dead with multiple stab wounds all over the body in a bush near Village 74, Huchu, Mvuma,” he said.
“The victim had boarded a silver Toyota Noah in Chivhu intending to go to Masvingo before being attacked by three men and a woman along the way.”
Ass Comm Nyathi said the assailants stole valuables and cash worth US$900 and R1 000 from the victim and other passengers who were also in the vehicle.
He urged members of the public to respect the sanctity of human life and report perpetrators of murder.
