Five suspected armed robbers shot and seriously injured a farm worker in Beatrice on Saturday night. Police believe they got away with 450m of copper cables valued at US$40 716. The suspects are still at large. Mashonaland East Acting Provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nobert Muzondo, yesterday said Steven Mari (33) of Denby Farm was shot with a pistol in the right thigh and was taken to Beatrice Hospital before being transferred to Chitungwiza General Hospital.
Asst Insp Muzondo said Mari heard a moving vehicle and he went to inform the farm owner Ishmael Matafi (48), and other workers that a trespasser could be in the farm.
Matafi, Mari and other farm workers drove around the farm in a truck and saw a blue Toyota Haice (ADE 2818) with tinted windows with five people on board. Police said Matafi and some workers went to the vehicle and tried to open the doors but they were locked.
Matafi drew his .303 riffle, which was not loaded, and ordered the driver to switch off the engine but he refused.
It was at this point that one of the men in the Hiace shot Mari in the right thigh, prompting Matafi and his team to flee to safety. The driver of the Hiace drove away as Matafi made a report to police in Beatrice. After some investigations, police discovered that 450m of copper cables had been stolen.
Asst Insp Muzondo appealed to anyone with information that might lead to the arrest of the five suspects to contact their nearest police station.
