AN 18-year-old man from Budiriro allegedly stabbed his uncle, in what he argues was self-defence, leading to his relative’s death.

Miguel Saburi Makaranga was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo yesterday.

He was told to apply to the High Court for bail as he is facing a third schedule offence.

According to prosecutor, Lawrence Gangarahwe, the stabbing incident occurred on April 20, 2024, at around 4pm.

Makaranga and his uncle had an altercation over an undisclosed issue involving Makaranga and his cousin brother, Shingirai Mukwande, who had previously assaulted the uncle over a domestic dispute.

The prosecutor alleged that the uncle confronted Makaranga, holding a kitchen knife and threatening to stab him.

Makaranga blocked the attack and retaliated by stabbing his uncle with an unknown sharp object in the back and then fled the scene.

The uncle succumbed to his injuries.

The incident was reported to the police the following day by Sophia Makaranga, who found the dead man slumped on the sofa.

A post-mortem conducted on April 26, 2024, revealed that the cause of death was hemothorax, lung and heart laceration, and puncture wounds in the chest and back region.

Meanwhile, a 19-year-old man from Southlea Park was arrested on Sunday after stabbing his brother following a misunderstanding.

The incident occurred when Tichawona Chinyanganya allegedly stabbed his elder brother, Takunda Chidamarambe (21), in the stomach using a kitchen knife.

Police said the brothers share the same mother and the incident happened at 1383 Southlea Park, where the two men live.

According to reports, on Sunday, at around 1am, Takunda returned home from a beer binge.

He began insulting their tenant.

Tichawona then emerged from the house to try to calm him down but matters escalated.

One of the tenants, Charles Chemhere (31), said he heard Takunda screaming for help before he noticed him bleeding profusely from the stomach.

“He then told me that he had been stabbed on the stomach by his brother.

“He sustained a cut on the stomach and was bleeding severely,” Chemhere said.

Provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed that police were investigating the incident.

“Police are investigating an assault case involving brothers in Southlea Park.

“One of the brothers sustained a cut on the stomach and the accused has since been arrested,” said Insp Chakanza.
