Man steals debit card, blows $170 on booze

AN 83-year-old grandmother was rushed to hospital after her 30-year-old grandson stole her debit card and blew $170 on booze.

The court heard that Alice Hartley Williams used to keep the debit card in her granddaughter’s bedroom.

Trevor Green reportedly saw where the card was kept after his grandmother asked him to accompany his cousin to buy groceries. He allegedly overheard his grandmother giving his cousin the PIN number.

The card went missing between 28 July and 3 August.

Green’s uncle was phoned by neigbhours who saw him on a spending spree.

The accused reportedly came back home and was found in possession of a debit card and receipts from TM super market. The family reported the matter to the police which then led to his arrest.

Appearing before magistrate Mrs Adeline Chikweshe-Mbewure, Green denied the charges.

He insisted that he only used $60 to buy spirits, dilution and a Russian sausage.

Since the grandmother who is the complainant in the case was at the hospital, Mrs Chikweshe – Mbewure put the accused off remand and ordered the case to proceed by a way of summons.
