A 24-YEAR-OLD Plumtree kombi driver will spend the next six months in prison and has in addition been banned from driving a public service vehicle after he was arrested at a roadblock while driving without a licence.

Lucky Zikhali was intercepted along the Plumtree- Madlambuzi Road in Bulilima District while carrying passengers in his vehicle.

Zikhali was convicted by Plumtree magistrate, Mr Livard Philemon for driving without a licence.

He was sentenced to six months imprisonment and in addition was issued with a lifetime ban from driving a public service vehicle.

In his mitigation, Zikhali said it was not his intention to break the law as he was trying to earn a living.

“This is the only job that I managed to secure after trying for several years without luck. I assumed that since I could drive a vehicle then I could use that knowledge in order to put food on the table for my family,” he said.

Prosecuting, Mr Elisha Mazorodze said Zikhali was intercepted on 21 July.

“Zikhali was travelling along Plumtree-Madlambuzi Road in a public service vehicle with five passengers on board. Traffic police that were manning a roadblock along that route stopped him with an intention to inspect his vehicle and documents.

“The police requested to see Zikhali’s driver’s licence but he failed to produce any resulting in his immediate arrest,” said Mr Mazorodze.

He said Zikhali was a driver of a public service vehicle on the Plumtree-Madlambuzi route.
