A 36-YEAR-OLD general worker stole pig food from his employer’s farm and was caught while fleeing with the bag of stock feed on a bicycle.Maxwell Phiri, who was employed at Lot 2 Manande Irrigation in Figtree, stole a 50kg bag of stock feed from his employer, Antony Rosenfels. The complainant came across Phiri riding a bicycle which was loaded with the pig food.

He stopped him but Phiri dumped the bicycle and fled the scene. The complainant proceeded to his homestead where he discovered that a bag of stock feed had been stolen.

Prosecuting, Medica Tshuma said Phiri stole the stock feed on April 2.

“The complainant was driving his car towards his farm around 6pm when he came across Phiri riding a bicycle loaded with a 50kg bag of pig food.

“Phiri saw the complainant, then dumped the bicycle and the bag of stock feed and fled the scene. Rosenfels took the bag of pig food and returned with it to his compound where he discovered that a bag was missing from his storeroom. He reported the matter to the police who pursued Phiri and arrested him while at his homestead,” said Tshuma.

Phiri appeared before Plumtree magistrate Gideon Ruvetsa facing charges of theft. Ruvetsa ordered him to pay $20 or spend 20 days in prison in case of default. He told the court that he hoped to sell the bag of stock feed in order to raise money to feed his family.

“The money I am getting from work is little and it is difficult for me to fend for my family. I was hoping that I would sell the pig food and buy food for my family. I thought my boss would not notice that a bag was missing,” he said.

The value of the stolen stock feed is $25.
