POLICE have confirmed the arrest of Thulani Jere (43), of Pumula East, Bulawayo, for 26 counts of unlawful entry into premises and theft, which stretched for twenty one months.
In a statement, CID spokesperson, Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri, said the suspect had been terrorising Hillside, Famona, Ilanda, Ascot, and the surrounding areas.
Det.-Insp. Muteweri said Jere, together with an accomplice, Xolani Moyo, who is still at large, targeted residential premises, lodges, guest houses, and BnB houses.
She added that the suspect struck during late-night hours while occupants were asleep.
“The suspect’s breaking spree, which began in July 2024, came to a halt on April 24, 2026, when detectives from CID Homicide, Bulawayo, acted on a tip-off, linking him to a series of unlawful entry cases,” said Det.-Insp. Muteweri.
She said detectives acted quickly on the information, leading to Jere’s arrest at his home.
On July 6, 2024, the suspect allegedly broke into one of the complainants’ houses, ransacked it, and escaped with US$4,000.
On August 15, 2024, he allegedly struck again, stealing US$1,600 from another complainant.
On December 2, 2024, the suspect allegedly forced entry into another complainant’s apartment and made off with a satchel containing US$7,224 and R3 000, Det.-Insp. Muteweri said.
He then attacked a lodge with the suspect allegedly breaking into a room occupied by a sleeping guest and stealing a wallet containing US$1,480 and a cellphone.
On January 21, this year, at around 0230 hours, Jere allegedly broke into another complainant’s apartment and escaped with US$2 000, R3 000, and personal documents.
The suspect will now answer a total of 26 unlawful entries into premises and theft cases.
A drilling machine, grinder, and a lithium battery, among other items, were recovered.
Jere is expected to appear in court today.
Meanwhile, the police said they are still searching for the outstanding suspect, Xolani Moyo.
“Zimbabwe Republic Police continue to urge members of the public to take proactive measures by reinforcing all security measures at their premises and removing opportunities that allow criminals to gain easy access to valuables,” Det.-Insp. Muteweri said.
