A MUTARE resident took his own life after a disagreement with his wife over custody of their ten-month old child.

Fungai Lucas Mussamba (33) of Mozambican origin died after ingesting poison at his home following a disagreement with his wife, Ndaizivei Manyuta (34).

The police confirmed the incident that happened on April 13, 2025, around midday, when Mussamba told his wife that he wanted to return to Mozambique with their ten-month-old baby.

Manyuta opposed the idea, leading to a misunderstanding.

The couple sought help at Hobhouse Police Station, where they were told that due to the child’s young age, it would be best for the mother to retain custody.

Manyuta reportedly returned home before heading out to the market where she sells fruits, while Mussamba remained at the station.

Upon returning home from the market around 5pm, Manyuta found Mussamba kneeling on the floor with froth coming from his mouth.

Manyuta sought help from the neighbours, but unfortunately, Mussamba had already passed away.

The incident was reported to the ZRP Hobhouse, who responded and investigated.

They found no visible injuries on the body, but a suspected poison smell was detected.

The body was taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for a post-mortem.
