Simbarashe Kangai (27) of 18480 Unit L had been ordered by the court not to visit his former wife but breached the order.
Prosecutor Mr Edmond Ndambakuwa proved that Kangai went to his in-laws’ place where his wife was and punched her after she reminded him of the order.
She sustained a bruised and swollen face.
After the incident, Mufudzi Muyeye (27) a police officer stationed at Chitungwiza police station, went and tried to arrest Kangai on 19 March at around midnight for contravening the Domestic Violence Act and brought him to Unit K police base.
While at the base, Muyeye ordered him to sit down but he walked out of the room. Muyeye followed and grabbed him by the belt while dragging him back to the base.
On the way, the court heard that Kangai pushed the officer who hit his head against a precast wall. Muyeye took his handcuffs and tried to restrain him but was overpowered.
Kangai reportedly seized the cuffs and hit the officer on the forehead.During the melee, Muyeye’s workmate Talkmore Muchepa (24) arrived at the scene and was also hit on the head with the same cuffs as he tried to apprehend Kangai.
He sustained a deep cut. The two police officers reported the matter leading to his arrest.
Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo sentenced Kangai to 10 months in prison and set aside four months for the next five years.
The remaining six were suspended on condition he does community service at the court’s premises.
