A HARARE man, Godknows Chawaipira, has been ordered to pay ZiG1,000 per month as maintenance for his eight-year-old son.
His ex-partner, Priviledge Tatile, appeared before Harare Civil Court Magistrate Johanna Mukweshe, accusing Chawaipira of not maintaining his son.
“He last paid fees when our son was in ECD, he is now in Grade 3,” she said.
“He told me he is not getting all of his salary because he is paying for a loan which he got for a stand. He said he put it (the stand) in our son’s name but never showed me the papers.”
Tatile told the court that she wants US$70 and ZiG1,000 a month from Chawaipira to take care of their son’s needs.
However, Chawaipira opposed the application and told the court that he was only getting his salary in local currency and he can only afford to pay ZiG1,000.
“I took out a loan to buy a stand which I put in my son’s name, so all my United States dollar salary is going there to cover the loan. I am getting my salary in ZiG only. I can afford to pay ZiG1,000 in the meantime,” said Chawaipira.
He also told the court that he has a wife and three other children.
‘’I have a wife and three children whom I am taking care of as well and we are already struggling to live off my current salary,’’ he said.
Magistrate Mukweshe ordered Chawaipira to pay maintenance of ZiG1,000 every month, starting from July 31.
