A KARANI Village family is mourning the death of Charles Saha (54), who died after being trapped in a veld fire on October 22.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, said Saha left home at about 3pm to clear land and burn plant residue in preparation for the upcoming farming season.
He informed his wife, Pindukai Timire (54), about his mission.
Saha started a fire upon reaching the field, but failed to contain it as it spread.
Timire rushed to the scene after the flames grew out of control, and discovered her husband dead.
She reported the incident to Rusape Rural Police Station, and police attended the scene and transported the body to Rusape General Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
Police have urged the public to exercise caution during the hot season, warning that dry grass, high temperatures, and windy conditions make controlling veld fires difficult.
Authorities urged farmers to utilise safer land preparation methods to protect property, environment, and human lives from uncontrolled burns.
