Man up for murder after strangling pregnant wife over food

Fungai Lupande – Mashonaland Central Bureau

A 27-year-old man from Mapunga Farm Compound in Bindura is facing murder charges after he allegedly strangled his pregnant wife until her water broke during an argument over food on Christmas Eve.

Itai Madewekunze appeared in Bindura Magistrate’s Court and was remanded in custody to January 14, 2025.

Prosecutor Gertrude Mayenyeso told the court that on December 24, 2024, around 7 pm, Madewekunze returned home to find that his pregnant wife had not prepared supper for him.

A disagreement arose, and the wife suggested that he should go and get food from his mother’s house.

In a fit of anger, Madewekunze grabbed his wife by the throat and began to strangle her. She screamed for help, prompting Believe Maringisa to try to intervene.

Maringisa bit Madewekunze in an attempt to stop him, but he refused to release his grip. As a result of the struggle, the wife’s water broke, and she was rushed to Bindura Hospital.

Unfortunately, after giving birth, she passed away. The accused had bite marks on his back as a result of the altercation.
