A Harare man, who was entrusted with US$2 100 to deliver to another person, allegedly used the money for sports betting instead and later disappeared from the city.

Tadious Mutevhe (40) appeared before Harare provincial magistrate Ms Ayanda Dhlamini yesterday facing a charge of theft of trust property.

He pleaded guilty and was remanded to today for sentencing.

The complainant, Kudakwashe Munetsi, is Mutevhe’s nephew and had employed him as his assistant.

Prosecutor Mr Takudzwa Mutyavaviri alleged that on June 25, 2026, while in Harare’s central business district, Munetsi entrusted Mutevhe with US$2 100 to deliver to Takunda Mahachi in Avondale.

Instead of delivering the money, Mutevhe allegedly converted it for his own use by using it for sports betting.

The court heard that when Munetsi demanded the money, Mutevhe failed to account for it and allegedly continued giving excuses before disappearing from Harare.

Munetsi subsequently reported the matter to the police, leading to Mutevhe’s arrest.

The total amount involved was US$2 100, of which US$1 000 was recovered.
