Zimbabwe must re-align its council by-laws with national laws to effectively manage and preserve its wetland resources, a legislator has said.
Warren Park National Assembly representative Engineer Elias Mudzuri, said this at a belated World Wetlands Day ceremony in Harare. “There is need to re-align the city by-laws to the legislative laws to reduce the friction between the urban planners and the policy makers while increasing competence on conservation,” he said.
Eng Mudzuri said urban planners should come up with plans that avoid erection of structures on wetlands.
He said lack of resources and poor co-ordination hampered efforts to manage and preserve wetlands around the city.
“Limited resources to monitor the wetlands is a cause for concern hence I urge residents to work together in conserving the wetlands,” said Eng Mudzuri.
Wetlands play an important primary function in the regulation of hydrology, water purification and flood control.
