A 40-year-old woman is battling for life at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo after a manager and two security guards at a city wholesale outlet allegedly brutally assaulted her, accusing her of shoplifting. The trio allegedly locked up Sipho Mahlangu of Nketa suburb in a storeroom for about eight hours after severely beating her up with a baton.
Evans Nyoni, 30, the manager, Sehlule Ndlovu, 30, and Victor Mutsunguma, 35, employed at N Richards Wholesale near Renkini Bus Terminus, appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Sibongile Msipa yesterday.
They pleaded guilty to assault.
The court heard that Mahlangu is admitted to Mpilo Hospital in a critical condition.
She sustained swollen thighs, feet and a deep cut on her cheek.
Magistrate Msipa remanded the trio to December 11 saying the court is still waiting for Mahlangu’s medical report.
Prosecuting, Charles Danda told the court that on November 24, Nyoni, Ndlovu and Mutsunguma picked up Ndlovu after suspecting her of shoplifting.
“During interrogation, Nyoni, Ndlovu and Mutsunguma assaulted Mahlangu with a baton several times all over her body. The accused later released Mahlangu but did not report the matter to the police,” Danda said.
He said Mahlangu was taken to hospital where she is admitted.
“Mahlangu sustained swollen feet and bruises all over her body and the medical report is not yet available,” Danda said.
