THE success of school development initiatives hinge on the payment of fees on time and using money for intended purposes.
This was said by the headmaster of Manama High School Mr Taelo Muleya at the school’s speech and prize giving day recently.
“It starts with us headmasters being transparent and using the money for the intended purpose. That way parents will be able to participate even in future projects meant to make the school a better and more conducive learning environment for their own children,” said Mr Muleya as he took Sunday News on a tour of the school last week.
Mr Muleya said through the School Development Committee they have been able to improve facilities and security at Manama.
“A lot of buildings have been built, an arts centre/museum, library — one of the best in the province, computer block, a generator, fenced hostels and teachers’ lodgings and we built dormitories and teachers’ homes,” he said.
He said his school would always strive to deliver promises to parents.
“What we promise to do with the levies they pay we will deliver as Manama High School. Apart from immovable property development, we have also acquired vehicles for use by the school in educational projects like trips and for sports all financed by the parents’ body.
“We have even tiled toilets and bathrooms making them have a modern touch. We are in the process of constructing two blocks of buildings to accommodate up to four families. Two houses will also be painted,” said Mr Muleya as he pointed to other recently painted buildings around the school.
Manama are past winners of the prestigious Secretary’s Bell which is awarded to a school that has shown good results, development and success in extracurricular activities.
Results at O-Level improved from 52 percent in 2012 to 71 last year. In 2012 the A-Level pass rate was at 93,84 percent while last year it was an even more impressive 95,45 percent.
The headmaster disclosed that teachers —Siphephisiwe Dube and Stanley Mlilo — would be honoured for producing 46As and 45As in Geography and History at O-Level respectively.
It will be double celebration for Dube as her husband Pearson would be recognised for his 12As in History and Nkululeko Sibanda (Seven As in IsiNdebele.)
Amoti Vella a former headmaster at the school was honoured yesterday with one of the streets at the school named after him for his contribution among other former headmasters.
