The Herald September 23 1980 “BEING selected Soccer Star of the Year is a boost not only to me, but all the officials, players and supporters of Dynamos,” David Mandigora said yesterday.
The national linkman said he had been flooded with congratulations from all parts of the country since he was crowned “king” of soccer on Friday night.
“Although I’m pleased to have been honoured, my most memorable moment was my debut for Dynamos first team.
“I remember the day vividly and winning the Soccer Star of the Year title does not erase the excitement.”
Mandigora, who joined Dynamos in 1973 after captaining his school team, says the winning of awards and other honours should not make a player “big-headed”.
“If a player is honoured he should continue to train hard so that he continues to command respect among those who watch league, cup and international matches,” he said.
The Gatooma-born player’s advice to those who would like to be recognised for their performances in any sport is that one has to train hard, be fair and level headed. Mandigora promises to set an example in good sportsmanship, on and off the field “as there are many people watching you without your knowledge”.
Soft spoken David could hardly believe it when he was chosen as Zimbabwe’s top player at the banquet.
