Energy and Power Development Minister Elton Mangoma on Friday said Government would provide funding from the Rural Electrification Agency to support companies doing bio-energy projects.
He was speaking at Boka Tobacco Auction Floors where he had gone for a familiarisation tour of bio-energy demonstrations conducted by a local company, A and B Evolving Energies.
“We want to popularise bio-energy and we have since started working on prototypes at Harare Hospital and Roosevelt High School so that people can appreciate the importance of using this energy genre.
“There are many advantages in switching to the technology.
“It cuts costs, creates employment for local people and reduces over-reliance on imported products since most of the raw materials will be sourced locally,” Minister Mangoma said.
He was happy some players in the private sector were already involved in the programme.
“I am also happy that Finance Ministry has already confirmed that it had directed that funds be transferred to REA from where we can get part of it for the bio-energy programme,” Minister Mangoma said.
