TRIANGLE coach Genesis Kaka Mangombe says his team’s confidence is growing as they prepare to face Manica Diamonds in a Chibuku Super Cup quarter-final at Sakubva today.
Triangle lifted the trophy in 2018 and Mangombe himself won it last year with Dynamos. He believes those memories can fuel another deep run.
“We are transforming the team and the results show we are doing pretty well. The momentum and confidence to win games is here,” Mangombe said. “Everyone is playing to win, and that gives us confidence in each and every game we play.
“This isn’t new for us. I won the Chibuku final with Dynamos, and this team, Triangle, has won it before. That history is a plus for us as we try our best to upset our opponents.”
Triangle are still fighting to secure their Premiership status, but Mangombe insists that won’t distract from their cup ambitions.
“We are not afraid of anything. As for relegation, I’m sure we are not going to be relegated because the team has changed; everything has changed,” he said.
Before Mangombe’s arrival from Tanzania, Triangle were rooted in trouble under Luke Masomere. They have since steadied, moving out of the automatic drop zone even though they remain in the relegation matrix.
“This team was losing every game, but you now see the change. We’ve gone 16 games with only one loss. We are scoring goals, which means we have a lot of positives and somewhere to start,” said the coach.
Their recent cup form underlines that progress. Triangle dumped 2016 Chibuku champions, Ngezi Platinum in the previous round, a result that strengthened belief they can mix it with the best.
“Beating the former champions, Ngezi Platinum, to progress to the next round is not easy for a team in our position. It shows the team is playing well and we will try to keep on doing extra well,” Mangombe said.
The sugar cane side now look to extend their revival by pushing for a second Chibuku Super Cup crown, with their coach confident that the blend of renewed spirit and proven pedigree can carry them through.
