GENESIS Mangombe inspired Triangle to their first win of the season in his debut match against Yadah at Gibbo yesterday, giving the Lowveld-side hope that they can still turnaround their fortunes.
Joel Munsaka’s first half strike made the difference.
Mangombe was unveiled as the new Triangle head coach 24 hours before yesterday’s kickoff and went straight into the thick of things, producing an instant positive result.
Mangombe delegated Newsome Mutema for post match duties and the assistant coach who avoided the axe from the previous technical team was happy with the three points.
“It was the win which we needed and we had to work very hard with the players to make sure we get the much needed three points for the first time this season,” he said.
Triangle had not registered a single win under Luke Masomere in the opening six fixtures, only managing a draw at home against Highlanders before Masomere was relieved of his duties.
Mangombe returned to Zimbabwe after a short stint in the Tanzanian top flight after the opportunity to coach in the Premier League arose.
He has not disappointed.
The first half started well for the visitors with a compact midfield three of Thabani Kamusoko, Ali Sadiki, and workhorse Reginalt Ngazima dominating possession.
Chances were few and far between for both sides, but Triangle capitalised from the half chance they created.
Defender Carlos Musimwa, who was arguably the best player in the field, was involved in the only goal of the match.
A long throw-in from his own half was expertly volleyed into the net in what was a moment of brilliance by Munsaka from 30 yards, beating Yadah goalkeeper Godknows Gurure who was out of position in the 39th minute.
The visitors almost doubled their lead on the end of halftime, but Munashe Bamara’s effort narrowly missed target.
This was after another good move involving Munsaka, who gave Yadah defenders a torrid afternoon under unusual perfect cool conditions in the lowveld.
Triangle had to drag themselves over the line as they employed some delaying tactics to see off the match and earn the much needed three points.
Despite the victory, Triangle remain bottom of the log because of their inferior goal difference, but a win was long overdue for the sugar producers.
“We did a lot of work in terms of defending as a team, we have been conceding from set pieces and today we did well in that area and we are proud of the result and hope the win will give us confidence going into our next matches,” said Mutema.
Yadah coach Ikabort Masocha was visibly disappointed after full time whistle but applauded the home side for the good shift.
“They played very well and took their chances, we struggled in the game. We need to really look into ourselves and decide to come up with another formula because this one failed, we failed to play the game that we normally do. Kudos to the home team, they managed to get the three points,” he said.
